For nearly 20 years, Gideon’s Promise has been transforming the criminal legal system by building a movement of public defenders committed to delivering equal justice for marginalized communities. Though founded in Atlanta in 2007 by Jon Rapping and Ilham Askia, Gideon’s Promise has always had deep roots in the D.C. indigent defense community, where many early supporters helped shape the organization’s mission and momentum.

Since its founding, Gideon’s Promise has trained and supported over 3,000 public defenders nationwide—changing the culture of public defense and championing a more humane, client-centered approach to justice. Through the work of these defenders, the organization continues to fight the injustices of mass incarceration, support families, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

The D.C. Fall Promise Party is our annual celebration of this powerful work. It’s a time to honor Gideon’s Promise’s longstanding ties to the D.C. legal community, recognize the supporters who fuel its mission, and recommit ourselves to the fight for justice.
