This past July, Gideon’s Promise held it’s 16th graduation as the Class of 2023 completed the three-year Core 101 Program. When you include the graduates of our Maryland partnership that launched in 2014 and our Texas partnership that launched in 2022, these lawyers join hundreds of freedom fighters across the country who wake up every day to resist attacks on the civil liberties of this concept of democracy that has never been realized but has remained our nation’s aspiration.
For five decades public defenders have stepped into spaces where people with power worked to deny basic liberties to those without. They have always been under-resourced and disrespected. They receive no fame or glory. But they fight to ensure the guardrails that protect all of us are respected.
